Etz Chaim - "A Tree of Life"
After the Torah—the Word of God—is returned to the Ark, this Hebrew liturgy is recited or sung. The English translation is: "It is a Tree of Life to them that hold onto it, and all who uphold it are happy." The Tree of Life is mentioned in Genesis because it stood in the Garden of Eden and is linked forever with living. There are many stories, metaphors, and mysteries that relate to the Tree of Life. For example, the clouds symbolize this eternal life that is yet hidden from us. The framework of a Torah is made from wood, and the one who reads from it holds onto the handle. Taking hold of the Scriptures brings delight, peace, understanding, and a connection with God. A tree is made up with stems and leaves. One can either enjoy it as an entirety or gaze at the bountiful leaves. So it is with Scriptures. You can study individual passages or see it as a whole. May the Word of God bring great joy and shalom (peace) to your life.
