New Beginnings
This illustration contains some symbols of new beginnings. It shows a full moon, (Rosh Hodesh), which determines when a new month in the Jewish calendar starts. This, like Shabbat, is considered to be quite important. Numbers 10:10 commands us to celebrate the new moon and to blow the shofar.
The shofar is blown during Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year. Because the Jewish community celebrates this holiday in the synagogue, the man is wearing a prayer shawl (tallit). There are actually four different "new beginnings"; this reflects the use of ecclesiastical, lunar, and solar calendars. The first of Nisan establishes the dates of the festivals and the duration of the reign of a king. The first of Elul initiates the tithing of animals. The first of Shvat commences Tu b'Shvat, the New Year of the Trees, and the first of Tishri determines the civil calendar or Rosh Hashanah. During the sounding of the shofar, there is absolute silence. All conversation and movement comes to a halt. The strong sound of the ram's horn is believed to reach God, Who returns answered prayers to us.
In addition, blowing the shofar symbolizes the substitute ram that God provided during Abraham's test, in which he was commanded to sacrifice his beloved son. The sound of this horn can also be utilized to announce the installment of a king or to alert the community of imminent danger. It was blown during the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, and it made the walls of Jericho come tumbling down.
Each of us celebrates many "new beginnings." The birth of a new child, a wedding, or a renewed commitment to serve and follow God are examples of this. This image was created as a keepsake of them all.
